If you’re new to Smart Dogs Training, you’re probably wondering about the person behind this award-winning dog training school!
Founded by Milan Shukla, Smart Dogs Training has been helping dog owners in Newcastle since 2018. Let’s delve deeper into the man behind it all. Special offer included below!
Early Love for Dogs
Milan Shukla’s love for dogs started when he was young. At seven years old, he spent a lot of time with his uncle’s German Shepherd named Diesel. This time with Diesel made Milan want to always be around dogs and to train them. But his family thought he wasn’t ready for the responsibility. They urged him to focus on his education instead. Milan respected their wishes and pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which he successfully completed.
Bringing Milo Home
In 2018, after finishing his studies and work commitments, Milan decided to follow his heart. He brought home his first puppy, a Belgian Malinois named Milo. Training Milo was tough but made Milan very happy. He learnt a lot about how dogs behave during this time. The journey was hard, with many challenges, but Milan remained focused on building a strong bond with Milo.
The Start of Smart Dogs Training
Milan trusted his instincts and wanted to learn more about dog training. Milan attended classes, online seminars, and read extensively, mastering canine behaviour. This helped him understand how to train dogs better. Milan realised he wanted to share this knowledge with other dog owners. By focusing on the science behind dog behaviour, he started helping local dog owners in Newcastle understand their dogs better. Turning frustrated owners into happy ones made Milan even more passionate about his work.

We also work with celebrities such as Alexander Isak, who we’ve been working with for over a year, and his dog is now a dream!
We sat down with Milan to understand his approach and philosophy behind dog training. Here’s what he shared with us:
Why did you choose positive reinforcement as your main training method?
“When I first started training dogs, I was introduced to aversive tools like prong collars and choke chains. These methods never felt right to me. In my quest to find a better way, I discovered positive reinforcement, and it was a revelation. Instead of punishing unwanted behaviours, this method focuses on rewarding desired behaviours, creating a more humane and effective training environment.
I retrained my dog using positive reinforcement, and the results were astounding. The bond between us grew stronger, and my dog responded much better.
Seeing these positive outcomes, I implemented this method in my consultations, and the consistent success stories reaffirmed my belief.
Positive reinforcement aligns with my values of compassion and respect for animals, supported by modern behavioural science. It fosters a trusting relationship between dogs and their owners, ensuring a safer, more enjoyable training experience.”
Can you share a Success Story of a client that benefited from Positive Dog Training?
“One client came to me frustrated with their dog’s poor recall. They had been using an e-collar, believing it was their only option. However, they were uncomfortable with the method and worried about their relationship with their dog. We switched to positive reinforcement, and the transformation was incredible. The dog’s recall improved significantly, and the owner-dog relationship strengthened.”
In the video below, Milan talks about another client who had a consultation call with him. The client was previously advised by another trainer to use a prong collar to manage their dog, and to pull harder if the dog did not respond positively.

According to Milan, he often encounters two common behavioural issues in dogs: reactivity to people and dogs outside the home, and reactivity to guests entering the home.
To address these issues, the first step is to identify the root cause of the reactivity. Milan’s approach involves:
– Breaking down the problem into smaller, manageable steps
– Teaching alternative behaviours to replace the reactive response
For example, instead of barking or lunging, we might teach the dog to:
– Make eye contact with the owner
– Sniff the floor
– Engage with a toy
By consistently reinforcing these alternative behaviours, the dog learns to associate the triggering stimuli (other dogs or people) with positive actions. This creates a new, more desirable response pattern.

At Smart Dogs, I often get asked what advice I’d give to pet owners thinking about training their dogs. Here’s my honest, experience-based guidance:
First and foremost, understand that effective dog training is not a quick fix. It’s a journey that requires time, patience, and consistency. But don’t let that deter you – the rewards are well worth the effort!
For Puppies: When training puppies, we’re setting the groundwork for their entire lives. This process takes time and consistent effort. It requires managing their environment to prevent bad habits from forming and teaching basic skills and positive behaviours from the start.
For Older Dogs – Changing Established Habits: With older dogs who have established behaviours that need modification, it’s all about changing those ingrained habits. We manage their environment to prevent repeating undesirable behaviours and introduce and reinforce new, positive behaviours.
The Power of Consistency: Think of dog training like breaking a human habit, such as quitting smoking. The first few days are challenging as it’s a new routine, but with consistency, it becomes easier over time. Without consistency, change is unlikely to happen. The same principle applies to dogs. Consistent training is key to lasting behavioural changes.
It’s More Than Just Commands: Training your dog is about much more than just commands; it’s about building a stronger bond between you and your pet and improving their quality of life. It’s about fostering mutual respect, understanding, and trust. Enjoy the journey and celebrate the small victories along the way!
